How to Select
the Proper Caster
Factory-Trained Caster Application Specialists are available to assist you with your selection.

Determine Load Capacity Per Caster
Divide the total weight load (including the cart or hand truck) by the number of casters supporting the load to determine the load per caster. Our load ratings include a substantial safety factor. However, if the casters are to be subjected to unusual shock or impact, at least the next greater caster capacity is advised. Listed load ratings are dynamic based on in-house test specifications.
Example: 800 lbs. = Total load including unit weight.
Four casters are needed for the application. 800 lbs. divided by 4 casters needed = 200 lbs. per caster required.
Determine The Type of Wheel Best Suited for Your Application
Wheel Size: Large wheels roll easier, are generally more maneuverable, and ride smoother over obstructions and floor ruts than smaller diameter wheels.
Wheel Hardness
Hard tread wheels will carry heavier loads, and typically require less starting force than soft tread wheels. Soft wheels ride easier over bumps, and are normally preferred on tile; linoleum, and other hard floor surfaces as they are quieter, provide better floor protection, shock absorption, and traction.
Wheel Material
Special wheel materials may be required when applications include exposure to oils, grease, acid solutions or other unusual environmental conditions. Please inquire.
Determine best combination of swivel and rigid casters for Your Application
Four swivel casters permit instant response to change in direction, allowing the castered vehicle can be easily parked in limited space.
A combination of two rigid and two swivel casters slightly restricts mobility somewhat but allows easier and more controlled steering over long distances
Determine the Proper Top Mount for Your Application
Holtz offers a variety of attachment methods, for any caster application.
The four primary methods of attaching casters include the following:
1. Top plate mounting
2. Stem/socket
3. Stem without socket
4. Threaded Stems
